Lake Inle, which lies in the eastern mountains in the Shan state, measures about 40km from N to S, but is only 5km wide. There are over 200 villages in or around it, supporting a population of 150000. Nyaung Shwe is the main town and primary tourist entry point.
The lake is very peaceful and lies in a beautiful setting with incredible colours. It is surrounded by several villages, a maze of canals and gardens in which the Intha, the local people, grow vegetables. The traditional Inle lake house is built on stilts.
