Sulawesi is a large, mostly mountainous island, located in central Indonesia between Borneo to the west, Nusa Tenggara in the south, the Maluku archipelago to the east and the Philippines to the north. With an area of 180000 km² it is the world's 11th largest island. Sulawesi has a distinct shape, as a hand with three fingers, each encircling a large bay. Its highest mountain is Mount Latimojong with an altitude of 3478m.
Sulawesi has a total population of 17.2 million inhabitants. Due to the fragemented terrain, a large number of ethnic groups speaking a total of 114 native languages exist. Most of the population is Muslim.
Touristic highlights of Sulawesi include the Tana Toraja area of southern Sulawesi where in August traditional funerals are held. The area around Manado in the northeast is interesting due to its local culture, wildlife areas such as the Tangkoko national park and the Bunaken marine park which attracts a large number of divers due to its impressive marine life.
How to get to Sulawesi
The main access points are Makassar in the southwest and Manado in the northeast, both having international airports.
