The island of Rügen (Rugia in Latin) is Germany's largest island and is located off the coast of Western Pomerania in the Baltic Sea. It measures 51km from north to south and 43km from east to west and has a total area of 926 km². Rügen has a very rugged coastline with plenty of bays and lagoons. It is famous for its steep white chalk cliffs (the Königsstuhl) on its northern coast. Along the northern coast of Rügen there are a number of beaches with several beach resorts, of which Binz is the main one. Rügen has ferry connections to Sweden and is accessible by car via the Rügen bridge near the city of Stralsund.
